Remember D-Day

Seventy-two years ago, thousands of soldiers from the U.S., the United Kingdom, Canada and other allied nations stormed ashore on the beaches of Normandy, France. Thousands of them died gaining a foothold on the beaches in a campaign that ultimately drove Nazi Germany from power in Europe and opened a new era of freedom. They made the sacrifice because they had to, but you never heard that generation complain. They believed they were fighting for freedom, and they were. I wonder what they would think about the current political situation, with a Socialist, a future felon and a thin-skinned narcissistic reality TV star vying to become the so-called leader of the free world. Never mind the complete turd those three hope to replace. I hope they didn't die for nothing.

When the shit hits the fan, I want this guy on my side

When this dude was 19, he was in the British Navy and had to participate in the invasion of France on D-Day. When he was 89, the folks in the nursing home he lived in told him he couldn't go to the 70th anniversary ceremonies. He said "Fuck you. I'm going."
A British D-Day veteran who was reported missing from a nursing home turned up in Normandy today after traveling to France to mark the invasion's 70th anniversary, authorities said.
Bernard Jordan, 89, sneaked out of the home on England’s south coast on Thursday after being told by staff he could not make the trip to Normandy. Donning his war medals, the Royal Navy veteran joined his former comrades on a coach and then a ferry to travel to France.
I'm sorry, this guy gets my "Stud of the Week" award for I don't know how long. Go, Bernie. You earned it.

He is pictured here with the "Candy Girls," who were performing 1940s songs for D-Day vets on the ferry from Great Britan to France. Dude scored.

They did this for you

On June 6, 1944, thousands of average guys poured out of those landing craft not knowing if they would get past the ramp, and they kept going. Thousands of them didn't get past the sand on the beach. Many never got past the ramp. History says they did it to defeat tyranny. That's not true. They did this for the brothers standing next to them, and for the people back home they wanted to protect. They did this for you.

Please don't forget it.

D-Day

People forget about this stuff, but 68 years ago a bunch of really scared guys in their teens and 20s went ashore anyway in the face of incredible odds. They prevailed. Or at least most of them did -- more than 4,000 Americans died that day. Just a week ago we celebrated Memorial Day, and I told you then, I'll tell you now: nothing you will ever do can compare to what these guys did. Live with it. And thank them. If you can't do it daily, at least do it today.
