Finally got back on The Farm

Despite a whole bunch of rain last weekend, I made it to The Farm. I got pretty wet, but I made it. A lot of fall crops are in and just getting started, but we also have the last gasp of the summer crops. These tiny peppers are really hot and probably are destined to become hot sauce:

But these sweet peppers are more likely to wind up in some kind of spaghetti sauce:

We are looking at a bumper crop of peppers, mostly of the hot variety. I have already jarred a metric shit ton of hot sauce, and dried another metric shit ton of peppers to grind for hot pepper. We'll see hot that all turns out. Anyway, here we have several plantings of turnips in various stages of development:

Likewise, we have two plantings of spinach going here. Some of the first planting came up, but a lot didn't -- probably because of the heat wave -- so a second planting is no coming in, as well:

Beets and cabbage coming in:

Cauliflower coming up, as well. Two plantings again, for the same reason as the spinach:

The last planting of beans is flowering, but does not seem to be producing. I think the bees went home for the winter, so this crop might not produce:

Kohlrabi, kale, collards. We got it all:

Even planted some brussel sprouts, which are coming in. Hope to have better results as a fall crop:

The carrots continue to produce, and a new planting is coming up. We'll see how that works out:

Harvested what is likely to be just about the last of the tomatoes. Got a bunch:

I also harvested a ludicrous amount of peppers, which I dried or turned into hot sauce. I think the picture was for shit, or maybe I didn't take one. Whatevs. Anyway, Jeb the Wonder Dog once again enjoyed sticking his nose out the window:

Just a couple days and I'll be back. We'll see what's what then.

Early fall on The Farm is pretty nice

Headed back to The Farm Sunday, as there was no Packers game to keep me away. The fall crops are looking pretty good. Spinach is sprouting:

The first broccoli crop is looking good:

It made a nice recovery from the bug infestation after I applied a little better living through chemistry a couple weeks ago. Lots of nice, healthy new leaves:

The radishes are busting loose, but I should have thinned them more. Took care of that Sunday:

First crop of peas are coming along nicely, as well. Supposed to be bush plants, but I am thinking of putting up a string trellis. They kind of look like they want one:

The second broccoli crop and the cauliflower also are coming along well, a few weeks behind the first crop:

The peppers continue to defy expectations and show no signs of slowing down despite the arrival of fall:

The second pea crop is coming along. No trellis for these guys, though -- too much like work:

Managed to harvest some peppers, beans, carrots, radishes and tomatoes -- probably the last of those:

Need to process the tomatoes and beans, get those frozen for later consumption. Dry the peppers to grind up. That's a day I'm not looking forward to. I have a ton of dried peppers to grind, and all kinds of bad things can happen doing that.

Did a little farming this weekend

So, I went to The Farm this weekend -- twice. My main trip was on Saturday. Mostly I watered, but I did a survey of the crops and a little harvesting. Turns out that volunteer melon-like plant over by the tomatoes is a pumpkin plant. And it's doing OK:

There are at least four pumpkins on the vine. Here's a couple more:

The broccoli continues to do well. It requires frequent watering to get it through this hot dry spell, but I think it's going to make it:

Bean crop #2 is thriving:

And bean crop #3 is coming along, as well. Probably see some harvest from crop #2 in a couple weeks:

The hot, dry weather has been particularly well-received over in the pepper bed, however. The banana peppers continue to pump:

And the serranos also are cranking, as are the habanerors, the chilis and the bells:

As I mention, I did a little harvesting. Got me some carrots, lots of tomatoes, good number of habaneros, some zukes and a squash:

Sounds like more zucchini bread coming, as well as some hot sauce on the horizon. Stay tuned.

For my Sunday trip, I watered and grabbed a few more tomatoes. Not much else to do, really, although with Farmer Tom now off on the Appalachian Trail until October, I have three or four beds that need fall crops. Need to pick something soon. Suggestions?
