Joe Cocker has left the building

I didn't see this coming so soon, but Joe Cocker is dead. He was only 70. Pretty much the only guy to have any success covering the Beatles (Aerosmith and Earth, Wind and Fire each had chart hits come out of that God-awful "Sgt. Pepper" movie in the late '70s, but I think that probably completes the list of successful covers of Beatles songs), the guy was downright spastic on stage. His voice sounded like he gargled hot bacon grease every morning and, for some reason, it really worked. He gave us some really great music, breaking into fame with this one:

Naturally, his onstage antics practically begged for comedic imitation, which John Belushi memorably provided on a 1976 episode of "Saturday Night Live," performing one of my personal favorites: I think Joe Cocker was a pretty good sport about it. RIP, Joe.
